Parent and Teacher Support
Parents
All parents are welcome to stay in the clinic and have a cup of tea whilst their child is receiving therapy. Parents of children receiving group therapy find that this gives them a valuable opportunity to talk with other parents who have children with similar speech and language difficulties.
In the case of children receiving individual speech and language therapy, the providing therapist will discuss with each parent whether it is appropriate for them to observe the therapy session. In the case of children receiving group therapy this is not possible because it can cause disruption.
All Speech and Language Therapists spend time at the end of each session, whether individual or group, talking to parents about the child's session and giving advice on activities to carry out throughout the week.
Parent workshops are run by our Speech and Language Therapists. They are designed to extend parents' knowledge in relation to their children's speech and language difficulties and to give them practical suggestions for help in the home environment.
You do not have to have a child at Edenside Clinic in order to attend one of these workshops.
School Liaison
All children attending Edenside Clinic will be given a folder containing suggestions and activities to support their speech and language therapy. These are designed to be carried out at home and at school. Within this folder there is a communication book for teachers, therapists and parents to write in to ensure good liaison between all the adults involved with the child.
The Speech and Language Therapists at Edenside Clinic liaise very closely with the children's teachers and aim to carryout a school visit on approximately a termly basis. This gives them the opportunity to observe the children in their classroom environment and to discuss their progress with the teachers. For children with Special Educational Needs, the Speech and Language Therapist can contribute to their IEP (Individual Education Plan) and/or any Annual Reviews.
Teacher Workshops
Our team of Speech and Language Therapists run regular workshops for teachers. These can be held at Edenside Clinic or within schools. They vary in format depending on the teachers' existing knowledge base but are likely to include information on how to recognise children with speech, language and communication difficulties and how to help them within the classroom. These can be provided in a variety of ways such as in-service training or twilight sessions.
These workshops are open to all schools and nurseries regardless of whether they have children attending Edenside Clinic and can be a valuable part of any professional's CPD.
